In 2017 the Texans recruited Deshaun Watson to have long-term position stability. Although the Clemson alumnus was worth Houston’s investment (12th overall draft pick), at NRG Stadium there is only consternation around his passer.
The offseason has been catastrophic in Texas. Following the end of Bill O’Brien’s tenure at the club, David Culley was chosen as the new coach of the Texans and had to deal, first, with Watson’s wishes to leave the club ─following in the footsteps of DeAndre Hopkins, now in Arizona.
As if the little will of the quarterback for remaining in the team was not enough, the player himself faces more than a dozen lawsuits for having sexually assaulted multiple women.
Watson will receive full attention for the aforementioned and there is a possibility that be placed on the commissioner’s list of exceptions already with the campaign started.
That said, Tyrod Taylor looks like the second option at the club. However, with his background in the Chargers it does not present an encouraging outlook for Culley (a medical error at the dawn of the 2020 campaign sent him to the bench and allowed the consolidation of Justin Herbert with the ‘Bolts’).
The third quarterback on the roster is Kellen Mond, a third-round rookie who appears to have been drafted in by the Texans (who incidentally had limited capital in the draft from a 2019 trade with the Dolphins) in an attempt to strengthen his quarterback against the variable Watson.
Another problem for the club is its receiving corps. In 2020 they said goodbye to DeAndre Hopkins and in the recent player market Will Fuller joined the Dolphins; so its rotation of wide receivers will star nomad Brandin Cooks, Chris Conley and newcomer Anthony Miller.
To make the Texans headstone heavier, JJ Watt followed in Hopkins’ footsteps on the exodus out of houston and the organization’s historic defensive team will continue his career in Arizona, where he reunited with ‘Nuk’.

Player to watch
For multiple reasons Deshaun Watson will attract all the spotlight. Clemson’s product comes from his best season in statistical terms: 4,823 yards (league leader), 33 touchdowns (seventh best record) and rating of 112.4 (second highest); However, his extra sports problems, coupled with his intention to leave Houston, are conjugated against the passer, who seems to have a time bomb in his hands.
Readings
Justin James Watt came to the NFL from the hand of the Texans (11th overall pick in the 2011 Draft) and for 10 years at NRG Stadium) the Wisconsin product established itself as one of the best defenders today. During his time in Houston, Watt became the leader in tackles for negative yardage (282) and quarterback sacks (101), he also had five Pro Bowl and All-Pro picks, he was named Defender of the Year three times (2012 , 2014, 2015) and took the Walter Payton in 2017.
