Substitute Danjuma sees hero role undone by bizarre own goal

Arnaut Danjuma played a leading role at Villarreal on Sunday evening. The Dutch winger seemed to score the winning goal for his team on a visit to Atlético Madrid, but Atlético came alongside in the absolute final phase.

Trainer Unai Emery had no place in his starting lineup for Danjuma. Without the 24-year-old attacker, Villarreal took the lead in the Wanda Metropolitano after the break. Manu Trigueros scored the 0-1 with a hard bang on behalf of last season’s Europa League winner. However, Atlético did not take long to level up again. Luis Suárez scored his first La Liga goal of the season at the request of ngel Correa.

Danjuma made his entrance in the 63rd minute. More than ten minutes later, he grabbed his moment in the spotlight. Teammate Yeremi Pino put the single international one on one with goalkeeper Jan Oblak with a well-watched pass, after which Danjuma rounded the ball hard and convincing: 1-2.

With that, Danjuma seemed to score the winning goal for Villarreal, but nothing could be further from the truth. In the closing seconds of the game, Aïssa Mandi scored a bizarre own goal by heading the ball back incorrectly. As a result, the game ends in 2-2.
