August 18th: Champions League on free TV again: highlights on ZDF
Football fans can look forward to the return of the Champions League to free-to-air television. After a three-year break, ZDF is again allowed to show moving images from the most important European Cup this season – however, in addition to the live broadcast of the finals, the second only shows summaries of the match days on late Wednesday evening.
Almost a year after the announcement of the final contract, the public broadcaster confirmed to the German Press Agency that it will show a one-hour program with summaries of the match day for the first time on September 15 at 11 p.m. According to ZDF, long summaries of the games with German participation will be shown on a total of 14 match days under the name “Sportstudio UEFA Champions League”. According to the broadcaster, the program also includes “excerpts and highlights from the other games on Tuesday and Wednesday”. It goes on to say: “Talks, opinions and analyzes round off the concept.”
August 16: DFB sports court: Cup-out for VfL Wolfsburg after substitution error
The Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg was subsequently deprived of its 3-1 victory in the DFB Cup at SC Preußen Münster due to a substitution error. After an oral hearing in Frankfurt / Main, the sports court of the German Football Association (DFB) upheld the regional league’s objection to the evaluation of the first round game. According to the sports court, the game was rated 2-0 for Preußen Münster.
Wolfsburg’s head coach, Mark van Bommel, substituted a total of six players in the match on August 8 in Münster. The Dutchman made three substitutions during regular time, and three other professionals were added in extra time. According to the DFB statutes, this is not allowed. Accordingly, Admir Mehmedi should no longer have been substituted for Maximilian Philipp.
The Champions League participant was apparently not aware of the relevant provisions of the DFB. A different regulation applied to the European Championship and the Olympic football tournament with six permitted changes in the event of an extension. The decision of the DFB sports court not only paved the way for Preußen Münster to reach the second round of the cup on 26/27. October. At the same time, the judge’s verdict gave the fourth division team a fixed premium of around 257,000 euros.
August 14: Seifert’s successor: Donata Hopfen becomes DFL managing director
Donata Hopfen will succeed Christian Seifert as CEO of the German Football League at the beginning of the new year. As the DFL announced, Seifert will leave the league umbrella organization at the end of December, six months earlier than planned. However, he will still be available to advise his successor if necessary. The 45-year-old Hopfen is moving from a consulting company to the DFL. Before that, she was, among other things, chairwoman of the publishing management of the “Bild” group at Axel Springer Verlag.
August 11th: 14 players and coaches from Mainz 05 have to be quarantined
Immediately before the start of the new Bundesliga season, FSV Mainz 05 is deeply in the corona chaos. A total of three players and an assistant coach tested positive for the virus, ten other people were quarantined by the health department, as the 05er announced on Wednesday. The club canceled the team training on the advice of the authorities, but in view of the number of acute cases that have recently increased daily, the question also arises: Can the runner-up RB Leipzig be played at all on Sunday (3.30 p.m. / Sky)?
