Senechal beats the sprint in Villanueva de la Serena

Tour of Spain 2021

The Frenchman successfully completed Deceuninck’s effort for Jakobsen, who punctured with a kilometer and a half to go

The French cyclist of the Deceuninck-Quick Step team Florian Senechal won the thirteenth stage of the Vuelta a España on the sprint, this Friday in Villanueva de la Serena, ahead of the Italian Matteo Trentin (UAE), while the Norwegian Odd Christian Eiking (Intermarché -Wanty-Gobert) kept the overall leader’s red jersey.

Fabio Jakobsen (Deceuninck-Quick Step) had won Don Benito’s intermediate sprint, thirteen kilometers to go, but suffered a puncture before the final sprint and it was therefore his teammate Senechal who successfully concluded all the work done by Belgian training.

“Fortunately, I had the radio to know that I had a green light, that Fabio was blocked, I don’t know why. I have an incredible team, who carried me to perfection. I say thank you a thousand times for what you have done for me today, “said Senechal after crossing the finish line. It is the first stage victory in a major round for the French rider, a specialist in the classics, who finished second at Ghent-Wevelgem.

In the general there are no changes. Eiking remains in the lead with 58 seconds ahead of the second, who is the French Guillaume Martin (Cofidis), and with one minute and 56 seconds over the third, the Slovenian Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma).
