GIESSEN – On June 1st the next chapter begins for the Bundesliga basketball players of the Gießen 46ers – at least in the operational business. Although it is not yet quite foreseeable in which division the traditional club will compete in the coming season, the course was already set on Friday morning at a specially convened press conference with Sebastian Schmidt as the new strong man. The 35-year-old, who was born in Bad Honnefer, will then be managing director and sports director in a double function at the 46ers. The concluded three-year contract applies regardless of the still unclear league affiliation.

“Gießen is a location with a lot of basketball tradition and I am really looking forward to the new challenge”, explains Schmidt with confidence and knows about the position of basketball in Lahnstadt. His objective is already clear: The 46ers should, despite the threat of relegation, become a re-established BBL club. “That has to be the goal of all of us. We have to develop the club sustainably so that it is fit for the future. This includes the general structure and the prospect of a new game and training facility.”

Sebastian Schmidt is known so far in German basketball through his three years with the Löwen Braunschweig. Most recently, the trained sports manager and event manager worked for the West German Basketball Association, which he was able to leave due to an option in favor of the Gießen 46ers. Stephan Dehler will continue to take over the management skills until Schmidt starts.

More to come.
