SC Freiburg: Will Dominique Heintz change at the last moment?

SC Freiburg has a total of six central defenders under contract – that’s at least one too many. Dominique Heintz in particular had bad cards recently, but a home grown man could also get more game practice elsewhere.

In the first Bundesliga game of SC Freiburg, Dominique Heintz was asked for half an hour: The 28-year-old came to the center of central defense for the injured Manuel Gulde in the second half. Since then, however, Heintz has been left out again: Before in the cup (1-0 against Würzburg) and most recently in the victories against Dortmund (2-1) and in Stuttgart (3-2), coach Christian Streich managed without Heintz.

It is quite possible that the left-footed man dares to jump at the last moment. Last season, Heintz only played irregularly and with the new national player Nico Schlotterbeck, there was even an additional player, which further intensified the competition in defense. Streich currently has a total of six defenders, including young talent Kiliann Sildillia – far too many for two or a maximum of three places in the starting line-up. However, there is little time for Heintz, whose contract in Breisgau will end in the coming year anyway: the transfer window in Germany closes on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Will Keven Schlotterbeck be awarded?

Defender Keven Schlotterbeck may also be looking for a chance elsewhere, at least for a short time. The 24-year-old German Olympic participant is a candidate for a loan deal. As in the Heintz case, the Freiburgers see the surplus of personnel, but no absolute urgency to act. The same applies to the long-awaited shopping for the storm: If there is no more surprise, the sports club will no longer be active this summer. With the recovered Nils Petersen, Ermedin Demirovic, Lucas Höler and the recently convincing talent Kevin Schade, you would be well positioned – the engagement of another, more physical attacker would then be possible in the future.
