Judoka Giovanna Scoccimarro has returned from her first Olympic Games. With the bronze medal from the mixed team competition in her luggage, she was welcomed at the airport by family, friends and her home club MTV Vorsfelde.

Tokyo / Frankfurt / Isenhagener Land – With the Olympic bronze medal in her luggage, Giovanna Scoccimarro landed back in Germany late on Sunday evening. A huge surprise awaited the 23-year-old at the airport. With a colorful poster and presents, family, friends and the home club MTV Vorsfelde prepared a triumphant return for the Lessien woman.

The team competition

Scoccimarro was not really satisfied with her personal performance in the first mixed judo competition. The anger over the defeats against the Japanese Chizuru Arai and the Dutch Sanne van Dijke is still great. But the euphoria about the Olympic precious metal predominates. “I am glad that the team achieved such a good performance and that it was still able to show it off. You’re just happy to have won a historical medal. This is super awesome! The medal means a lot to me. It’s a great finish. “The cheering next to the mat was at least as intense as the fights themselves.” It’s super nerve-wracking to stand there directly. You can’t influence how the other fights. It’s super engaging. You fight on the edge as it were on the mat, ”says Scoccimarro.

Team reception and sports show studio

After the intense competition, the day was far from over. After the interview in the Sportschau studio and the award ceremony, Scoccimarro and Co. were received and celebrated by the rest of the German Olympic team. The mixed team then spent the evening with other athletes, as far as the corona guidelines allowed. In any case, it was really late, as the 23-year-old reveals with a smile.

The arrival in Germany

Just one day later, the judoka headed back home. There was a great surprise for Scoccimarro at the airport in Frankfurt. Family, friends and their home club MTV Vorsfelde personally congratulated. “We were received really big. It was indescribable that so many people came by. “

In addition to numerous hugs and congratulations, there was also a small present from MTV in the form of a personalized weight plate. A banner also read “Giovanna – our Golden Girl” in capital letters. Moments that the 23-year-old will not forget.

Scoccimarro’s overall résumé of the Olympic premiere is nevertheless associated with a touch of sadness: “I think the Olympic Games were good. I would of course have been happy if I could have crowned my individual competition (5th place, editor’s note) with a medal. That would have been an incredible event. With a little distance I can celebrate my success a lot more and be much more satisfied with my individual performance. “

If it has her way, it shouldn’t have been the last participation. “I’m looking forward to the next Olympic Games and hope that I can qualify for Paris in 2024 and gather new impressions again.”

Now the clerk for office management wants to switch off first. An unusual feeling: “First of all, I have no training or work. I am really looking forward to this. The constellation did not exist before. Now I’m going to have a good time. ”For her, that means baking, cooking, but also doing sports.

Perhaps she tinkers with her planned “Olympic corner” in her free time, where she wants to place the certificate for her fifth place in the individual and her medal from the team competition
