“Okaneira’s Ina Valley Market” is held regularly using the indoor exhibition corner of Taro

At a corner of the agricultural products store “Taroya” in Katagiri, Nakagawa Village, people in the upper and lower Ina regions bring in daily necessities that they no longer use, and people who want them are free to take them home on a regular basis. Named “Okaneira’s Ina Valley Market”, as the name suggests, no exchange of money is required. Almost a year and a half has passed since the start of the corona sword, and the unique efforts aimed at realizing a sound material-cycle society have taken root and have been well received.

■ Lined up with narrow stores

The exhibition corner in the store is lined with clothes, tableware, toys, etc. brought by the exhibitors for a certain period of time. There are also variations such as film cameras, helmets, and judo clothing. A woman in her 40s with a 2-year-old son = Komagane City = gets a lot of children’s clothes and toys. “It helps. I wonder if it’s okay to get this much,” he said.

If there is no pick-up after the exhibition period, the seller will take it home. For that reason, sellers try to appeal by attaching a message card that explains their feelings for the product and its purpose. A woman in her 40s in the village said, “It’s a waste to throw it away. I’d be happy if someone could use it.” Participation in the initiative has also led to a review of lifestyle habits such as reducing waste.

The market is run by Mizuki Arakawa, the owner of the general store “GATO”, which is located inside the Taroya store. It opens once every two months and is due for about a week. Since last year, it has opened a store in the morning market “Tsubame Market,” which is held once a month in the village, and it is said that its recognition is spreading.

■ For the method of placing items in an unmanned space

This is an initiative born from the group “Okaneira’s Ina Valley” that “barters” each other using the Internet exchange site. In March of last year, site user Arakawa planned a one-day limited exchange event for members to come into direct contact with each other. However, as the new coronavirus infection began to spread in Japan, it was opened by switching to the method of placing items in an unmanned space as a measure of pain. Since then, it has been continuously implemented and established. Now that the number of site users has grown to nearly 1,000, “It is difficult to coordinate the delivery between the parties on the Internet, but here you can see the real thing and you can come to get it when you have time.” The voice of joy rises from the person.

“It’s difficult to manage, but I’m glad that everyone is happy. I want to continue within a reasonable range,” says Arakawa. We are considering extending the event period to two weeks. “It would be interesting if the efforts spread to various parts of Ina Basin and a unique market could be created with a lineup of products in each region.”
