The Nigerian delegation officially obtains its first Olympic medal in Tokyo, pending the result of wrestler Blessing Oborududu. In the long jump final, Ese Brume, 25, led the race for a long time (6.97m) before being done by the German Malaika Mihambo, new Olympic champion (7m on her last try) and by the Briton Brittney Resse (6.97m, but a second best try at 6.95m against 6.90m for Brume). As at the Doha Worlds in 2019, she comes back with a bronze medal. This is Nigeria’s third podium in the women’s long jump after Chioma Ajunwa’s gold in 1996 and Blessing Okagbare’s silver in 2008.
