New York Yankees, the timeless charm of a style that continues to please young people

Sweatshirt? It was Linus’ blanket that accompanied us for a year and more of a pandemic. When we ditched the shirt and in a moment our formal suit was replaced with a series of pieces that we previously only used on Sundays or in our free time. Sportswear and casual clothing is what we have shown off most within the walls of the house, all of them, regardless of age and the role we played outside. And the sweatshirt has become the new must have, even replacing the tuxedo on occasions when we never imagined it could happen. And what happens today? At the beginning of the week Pinterest released data on the most frequent searches in the fashion field by several generations in Italy – in their twenties, thirties, forties and fifties – underlining that regardless of age, the Pinner – that is, active Pinterest users – turn to the platform to find inspiration for various moments in their life. The mirror that the research returns, in the male field, which is the one we are interested in, reveals that the range between 20 and 40 years is decidedly the most lively and that vintage fashion is one of the trends that has tripled the number of searches . And this was in the air. The garment that seems to arouse the most interest? Sweatshirt, of course. But not just any one. That of the Yankees, the same one that in the nineties for those who went to New York for the first time it was impossible not to put in the suitcase of the return, without perhaps ever having even seen a game of the New York Yankees, or knowing that they are one of the most historic Major League Baseball teams based in the Bronx area.

Very elegant in their pinstripe uniform, what fascinates the New York Yankees is their logo. That iconic monogram, recognizable all over the world, in which the N overlaps with the Y – designed in 1877 by Louis Tiffany of Tiffany & Co. as the New York Police Medal of Valor for John McDowell, a policeman injured in a shooting , and adopted by the team only a long time later – he managed to cross the boundaries of sport and become a fashion phenomenon that continues today to arouse fascination even among the new generations. Which over time have elected him as a fashion brand, as a symbol of belonging, thanks also to accomplices of the caliber of Jay-Z, for example, who made the New York Yankees hat an indispensable part of the Rap and Hip artist’s uniform -Hop, but also Spike Lee, Denzel Washington and all the famous actors and faces that we have often seen wearing a hat with the symbol of the Bronx team.

Why so much hype and love around this logo? According to some studies, the Yankees brand is associated with the idea of the winning team par excellence, but it is also fueled by the long history and charm linked to the city of New York. From his, that logo so light, but at the same time so often meaningful, has also been repeatedly taken up by the world of fashion, especially when the world of fashion has reinterpreted its codes according to the aesthetics of street style, and youth culture has become the maximum target to turn to. So for example in 2018 the maison Gucci has created a collection in collaboration with the Major League of Baseball, taking up the logos of the North American baseball teams, New York Yankees primarily by spreading and embroidering their logo on wool caps, slippers, bags, but also dresses, coats and jackets.

More recently, in May of this year, Ralph Lauren also celebrated his bond with the world of baseball with a limited edition collection created in collaboration with Major League Baseball, which sold out in a few hours. Unstoppable charm.
