GIESSEN – The Bundesliga basketball team Gießen 46ers has added another piece of the puzzle to its squad for the 2021/22 season and signed Nuni Omot. According to a statement from the club, the athletic forward last played in Poland and can act in both the small forward and power forward position. At the traditional club in Giessen, he initially receives a contract for a season and will be number one. In the roster of head coach Pete Strobl, the native Kenyan, who plays international matches for South Sudan and is equipped with an American passport, is the eleventh player in the league.

The Omot had to accept a turbulent start to the European basketball career due to the corona pandemic. Starting at MZT Skopje in the 2019/20 season, where he quickly attracted attention across all competitions with an average of 18.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and a three-way quota of over 60 percent in seven games. The Dutch FIBA ​​Europe Cup representative ZZ Leiden was awarded the contract during this season. In the Eredivisie, the flexible forward posted 11.8 points and 2.7 rebounds. On the international stage, the athlete, who was skilled in both inside and outside play, was 17.8 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per encounter until the end of the season.

The international from South Sudan ventured a fresh start in Turkey at Tofas Bursa. After ten games in the league and in the Champions League and an average of 7.6 points, he went to his last club, Trefl Sopot, in December. For the Polish club, Omot put 17.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and one steal per game on the floor in 19 games with an average playing time of just under 29 minutes.

The performances shown brought the 26-year-old and his team to the cup semi-finals and the finals as well as the nomination for the national team for South Sudan, with which he is currently contesting the FIBA ​​AfroBasket 2021 qualification. In three games so far, the preferred candidate from Gießen achieved an average of 15.0 points and 2.3 rebounds.

Before jumping across the pond, Omot spent a season with the Brooklyn Nets’ farm team, the Long Island Nets, in the NBA G League. In 47 games he achieved 5.1 points and 1.8 rebounds. In addition, appearances in the NBA Summer League for the Golden State Warriors and the aforementioned Brooklyn Nets were on the program. The model athlete developed his suitability for this professional entry primarily with the Baylor Bears in the NCAA. He completed a total of 59 encounters for the renowned university. In his senior year, 9.9 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game, with a three-way quota of 43.3 percent, were recorded on the personnel sheet. In addition to the personal award and the election to the All-ICCAC D1 1st Team, Omot celebrated the division champion during this time and the entry into the NCAA Sweet 16 at the March Madness tournament.
