Municipality of Querétaro and UNODC inaugurate a mural and community court

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Mexico presented the preliminary results of the Play Live program, which it developed with the Municipality of Querétaro; and within the framework of the International Youth Day, it presented a mural and the restored and dignified basketball court in the Rubén Jaramillo Park.

This initiative is developed through the Center of Excellence for Statistical Information on Government, Public Security, Victimization, Justice (CoE) in coordination with the Sports Institute of the Municipality of Querétaro, the Institute to Prevent Risk Behaviors, the Youth Institute , the Secretary of Public Security of the Municipality of Querétaro, the Querétaro for Peace program and the Mexico Well Done initiative.

The Play Live program is aimed at young people between 13 and 18 years old to improve the regulation of emotions and strengthen life skills through sports. It also seeks to develop a greater capacity for empathy; encourage assertive decision making and prevent antisocial behavior and problematic drug and alcohol use.

In the medium term, the initiative fosters positive leadership and the taking of responsibility among families, neighbors and communities for the generation of new social ties, the detection of talents and the exchange of experiences through mentoring programs.

Rubén Jaramillo Park is one of the eight venues of the Play, Live in Querétaro program. The dignity of the basketball court was carried out in alliance with the Mexico Well Made initiative, and included the creation of a mural with social value that reflects the historical evolution of the neighborhood. More than 200 young people participated during the 10 sessions of the program.

During the opening event of the field, the Representative of UNODC in Mexico, Mr. Kristian Hölge, highlighted the importance of training youth as agents of change for the prevention of problematic alcohol and drug use, the promotion of healthy lifestyles. and the formation of socio-affective skills, in order to transform public and private spaces.

“Querétaro is an example for many municipalities and states in Mexico. They were the first to join a very important campaign that we have, the Blue Heart against human trafficking. It is the first municipality with Play, Live; They are also building families and surely we are going to have many more activities here ”, he mentioned.

The Municipal President of Querétaro, Luis Nava, assured that for the municipal administration it is very important that young people have tools to develop skills and can successfully face life’s difficulties and transform them into opportunities to get ahead.

“It is extremely important that young people have the tools, the spaces, but also the attitudes that allow them to successfully face the difficulties that life presents and those challenges. I want to tell you that you are counting on us, here we are at your service. We are here to make a team, to serve you and together to get ahead, that you have the best possible future and that together we build Querétaro the best city to live in. Of course you can, we are sure and we are going to make the best Querétaro, a great Querétaro well done, ”he said.

In this work, the organization México Bien Hecho (MBH) of the Comex Company joined, with the mural on the floor of the multipurpose court of the Rubén Jaramillo park, named “Time is the space between our memories” by Mich Texturas. In addition, young people and residents of the area, led by the Queretaro artist Saúl Cabrera, made another mural that represents the community entity.
