At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Guatemalan badminton player Kevin Cordon stole the show. At the same time, the coach, who is from Indonesia, is also being talked about.

Kevin Cordon unexpectedly advanced to the semifinals of the men’s singles badminton at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, before finally being defeated by Danish player Viktor Axelsen.

Cordon then also bowed to Indonesian men’s singles Anthony Ginting in the bronze medal match. But the 34-year-old’s action remains one of the surprises at this time’s Olympics.

Behind Kevin Cordon’s breakthrough at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, what was also widely discussed was the role of Muamar Qadafi as his coach. Moreover, Muamar was later also referred to as an Indonesian.

It was later known that Muamar Qadafi came from Sukoharjo, Central Java. He was born into a simple family who now lives in Cemani RT 7 RW 15, Grogol Sukoharjo.

When met by reporters, Suratman (65) who is the father of Muamar Qadafi also told about the world of badminton which his son was initially involved in as a player.

“At that time I was the manager of the canteen at GOR Setia on Jalan Bhayangkara. Then I was offered by the coach what if Muammar was put into the Golden Star club and practiced three times a week,” explained Suratman when met on Tuesday (3/8/2021).

Immediately, continued Suratman, the child’s talent continued to be honed and became better. The rapid development of Muamar’s badminton game made him enter PB Djarum.

“He didn’t graduate from elementary school, if I’m not mistaken in grade 4 or 5, he went straight to PB Djarum up to high school,” he continued.

Suratman did not specify exactly how Muamar Qadafi then changed the wheel from player to coach. He didn’t even remember when his son started training.

“As to when exactly Muamar started training, I don’t remember. But before going to Guatemala he had coached in Peru, Mexico,” he said.

Even though he did not succeed in bringing Corson to a medal, Suratman admitted that he was very proud of the results of his son’s hard work which is now also a byword. “It’s already exceeded the target, it’s okay. If I can win, my son will be known even more.”

After the Olympics, Suratman continued, Muamar will return to Indonesia because his contract as Kevin Cordon’s coach in Guatemala will expire after the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

“From Japan, I will return to Yogyakarta, and rest first with his family there. If you want to train later, I don’t know yet,” he concluded.
