MLB – Baseball: Rhys Hoskins’ season is over

Rhys Hoskins will miss the remainder of the season with an abdominal tear that requires surgery.

The powerful Philadelphia Phillies slugger made the announcement on Thursday.

Hoskins leads the Phillies with 27 homers and 71 RBIs and this news is a blow to the team’s hopes of making the playoffs.

The Philadelphia roster started the day Thursday five games behind the Atlanta Braves and the No. 1 in the National East section.

Hoskins played with the abdominal injury all season, but made it worse when he dived to catch a ball in a duel against the Washington Nationals on August 5.

Hoskins spent two weeks on the injured list, returned to the lineup on Sunday and slammed two long balls in a win over the San Diego Padres. The Phillies didn’t make another start until Wednesday, when he made a few plays on the field that made his injury worse.

In Hoskins’ last at-bat this season, he hit a tie in the eighth inning against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Hoskins mentioned Thursday that he couldn’t move sideways at first pad or run well enough to keep playing.

“It’s a shame,” he said. With the scale of our situation and the time of year, as a player, you want to be there to help the team as much as possible. There has been a lot of effort over the past few weeks to make this an option, but unfortunately sometimes the body just doesn’t respond. “

The Phillies put Hoskins on the injured list for 10 days. He is expected to have surgery next week and the healing period is six to eight weeks.

The Pennsylvania team are yet to play 36 games this season, although only six of those will be against opponents with a winning record, including a three-game streak against the Braves at the end of September.
