Open water swimming: the German Florian Wellbrock Olympic 10km champion, Marc-Antoine Olivier 6th

German Florian Wellbrock, reigning world champion and “tanned” in the 1500m freestyle on Sunday, won the gold medal in the 10 km open water in Tokyo on Thursday morning, ahead of Hungarian Kristof Rasovszky and Italian Gregorio Paltrinieri. Wellbrock finished the race in 1h48min 37sec. Bronze medalist in Rio 2016 then vice-world champion in 2019,, the French Marc-Antoine Olivier was sixth. The other French competitor, David Aubry, retired during the race.

The 26 participants had to cover a loop of 1,435 km seven times, escorted by boats, sea kayaks, paddles and other jet skis. With the water temperature measured at 29 degrees at 6.30am local time, at the start of the race, the main difficulty was to manage this tropical heat combined with the effort of an endurance race.
