Lyon hold their third signing of the summer with the Italian Emerson Palmieri, on loan from Chelsea

The Italian international left-back of Brazilian origin was loaned to Lyon for a year, the Rhone club announced on Thursday.

Olympique Lyonnais holds, with Emerson Palmieri, its third summer recruit after defenders Damien Da Silva (Rennes) and Henrique Silva (Vasco de Gama) who arrived free in June. Aged 27, Emerson Palmieri was transferred from AS Roma to Chelsea for twenty million euros in 2018. The loan amount is 500,000 euros to which can be added bonuses for a maximum of 500,000 euros.

This agreement is accompanied by a priority purchase clause until the end of the transfer window 2022 for a player who has extended his contract for one year, until June 30, 2023 with the London club, where he played a total of 71 matches. (2 goals) including 15 only last season (2 in the Premier League, 1 goal). With Chelsea, Emerson won the Champions League and European Supercup in 2021, the Europa League in 2019 and the FA Cup (2018).

Before coming to Europe, Emerson Palmieri dos Santos, who played in the youth teams with Brazil, was trained at Santos FC before being loaned to Palermo (Italy, 2014-2015) and then to AS Roma ( 2015-2016) where it was transferred in 2016 for two million euros. After obtaining Italian nationality in 2017, Emerson has 19 caps with the Italian team with which he has been playing since September 2018. He was crowned European champion with the Nazionale during the Euro 2020 disputed this summer.

Third Italian at OL after Fabio Grosso and Mattia De Sciglio

He started the tournament as a substitute before playing after his teammate Leonardo Spinazzola was injured in the quarter-finals against Belgium. Emerson Palmieri should start with OL on Sunday against Clermont in the match of the 3rd day of the French championship. He is the third Italian player to play for Lyon after Fabio Grosso (2007-2009) and Mattia De Sciglio last season.
