Lost medal chance: tennis doubles Zverev and Struff fail in the quarter-finals of the Olympics

The tennis doubles Alexander Zverev and Jan-Lennard Struff wasted the chance to win a medal at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. In the quarter-finals, the German duo lost to the Americans Austin Krajicek and Tennys Sandgren on Wednesday with 3: 6, 6: 7 (4: 7). This means that there is no longer a German pairing in competition.

Unlike the day before, Struff and Zverev were not without their own loss of serve. The two received a break to 2: 4 at Struff’s service, it was the decision in the first set. Zverev shook his head a few times, angry he threw his racket in the second round after a devious volley. The Hamburger and the Sauerland then fought their way into the tiebreak, in which the US professionals were the better.

The other German doubles Tim Pütz and Kevin Krawietz were eliminated in the round of 16. Nicolas Kiefer and Rainer Schüttler celebrated the last Olympic medal of a men’s doubles in 2004 in Athens with silver. At the start of the mixed competition, Laura Siegemund and Kevin Krawietz caused a surprise. The only German pairing defeated the three seeded Americans Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Rajeev Ram 6: 4, 5: 7, 10: 8 and made it to the quarter-finals. There they meet the Serbian top star Novak Djokovic and Nina Stojanovic. The third set was played out as a so-called match tie-break.
