The reason is, during the women’s doubles match against the Korean pair Kim So-yeong and Kong Hee-yong on Tuesday (27/7), Chen was heard shouting “cao”, an expletive in Mandarin. He repeated the word non-stop after he and his partner, Jia Yifan, lost in the first set to a Korean player and even after scoring. China beat Korea with a score of 2-1.

“It was just self-indulgence to score goals. I don’t expect my bad pronunciation to cause misunderstandings for anyone. I will also adjust my pronunciation,” Chen wrote on his Weibo account.
