Judo | Olympics: Two Georgian Judo athletes expelled from Olympics

Two Georgian judo athletes have been expelled from the Olympic Games for breaking COVID-19 protocols, a spokesperson from the Georgian National Olympic Committee has confirmed.

The two athletes violated the protocols by leaving the Olympic Village to go on an unauthorised sightseeing trip.

The athletes were Lasha Shavdatuashvili and Vazha Margvelashvili, who had won silver medals in the 73kg and 66kg categories respectively.

Both players left the Olympic Village on Tuesday night before embarking on a tour around Tokyo, in which they visited sites such as the Tokyo Tower, according to local media.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, everyone involved at the Tokyo Olympics must adhere to the strict protocols to prevent the tournament becoming a COVID-19 super-spreader.
