Jakob Schubert takes Olympic bronze in climbing

On Thursday Austria’s medal level at the Tokyo Olympics rose to seven: Jakob Schubert climbed to bronze in the combined competition.

The Spaniard Alberto Gines Lopez is completely surprisingly the first Olympic champion in sport climbing. By finishing first in speed, seven in bouldering and four in lead, the 18-year-old won the “Olympic Combined” competition with 28 gold points ahead of Nathaniel Coleman (USA / 30) and co-favorite Jakob Schubert (Austria / 35). Combined world champion and top favorite Tomoa Narasaki (Japan / 36) finished fourth.

Sport climbing is Olympic for the first time in Tokyo. The placements in the three disciplines are multiplied to a total number of points. In three years in Paris, the controversial discipline speed will be separated from the other two. Then medals for speed and a combination of bouldering and lead will be awarded.

Schubert has already won the seventh Austrian medal in Tokyo. So far, Anna Kiesenhofer (gold, road bike race), Michaela Pollers (silver, judo), Bettina Plank (bronze, karate), Shamil Borchashvili (bronze, judo), Magdalena Lobnig (bronze, rowing one) and Lukas Weißhaidinger (bronze , Discus).
