(Houston) The Houston Astros have accepted a dispute with the family of a 2-year-old who was hit by a foul ball during a game at Minute Maid Park in 2019, the family lawyer, Monday.
Lawyer Richard Mithoff has claimed the terms of the settlement between the Astros and the girl’s parents, Jonathan David Scott and Alexandra Colchado, were confidential. The Astros had no comment, according to a spokesperson for the team.
Judge Michael Gomez appointed a lawyer on Monday to independently review the girl’s needs and interests before the judge approves the deal, Mithoff said. The result of the review of the file will be known within two or three weeks, he added.
Now 4, the girl suffered a broken skull and brain injury. She has since been taking medication to prevent seizures. However, doctors started a drug withdrawal process and she has not suffered a seizure for 22 months, Mithoff said.
Her prospects are difficult to establish, he added, but her parents are hopeful that she will have a normal life.
The incident involving the girl was among those involving foul balls that led Major League Baseball to increase the area protected by netting along the lines on either side of the field to protect spectators.
