Historic bronze for Morelos in badminton – El Sol de Cuernavaca

The couple made up of Carlos Sierra and Ángel Curiel of the U-15 category, managed this Thursday morning to give Morelos its 42nd medal in the general medal table of the first Conade 2021 National Games, by obtaining the bronze metal within the discipline of badminton that is celebrated in the state of Aguascalientes.

The couple from Morelos managed to advance from the round of 16 to the semifinals where the powerful state of Jalisco prevailed in two sets by partials of 21-9 and 21-11, in the duel for the pass to dispute the final and the gold medal.

Ángel Curiel and Carlos Sierra, who train at the training school of the Institute of Sport and Physical Culture of the State of Morelos, achieved the historic medal in some games of this type, since Morelos had not appeared in this discipline in what was previously they called the National Olympics for Children and Youth.

To reach the medal, the duet prevailed in the round of 16 over its counterpart from Quintana Roo, and in the quarterfinals over the State of Mexico by absence.

Ángel with three years of experience and Carlos with four years in this sport, managed to hang the first medal for Morelos badminton after only having had one participation in the 2019 National Olympics. On that occasion, according to the president of the Francisco Alcántara Cortés State Association, Morelos was represented by only two athletes.

In addition to the men’s U-15 doubles metal, Morelos also scratched a second medal by reaching the semifinals for teams of the same U-15 category, after beating Aguascalientes 3-2 in the quarterfinals, but in the semifinals he lost against Nuevo León and for the third place medal fell against Baja California, remaining in fourth position.

The U-19 category with athletes from Morelos Dana Rivadeneyra and Axel Rogel is still pending as of this Saturday, August 7.

So far the 42 medals obtained by the Morelos delegation are distributed as follows: In swimming 13; weightlifting 7; athletics 4; Olympic wrestling 4; archery 4; open water 3; boxing 3; taekwondo 2; tennis 1; and badminton 1.
