After more than two weeks of competition, the Tokyo Olympics come to an end on Sunday. France obtained a last gold medal in women’s hand which allows it to go up to eighth place in the medal ranking.

The Tokyo Olympics ended on Sunday August 8. While waiting for the closing ceremony and the handover in Paris-2024, here are the main events of the last day of sports:

• Five years after Rio, Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge again won the Olympic Games marathon. In 2 h 08 min 38, he beat the Dutchman Abdi Nageeye (2 h 09 min 58) and the Belgian Bashir Abdi (2 h 10).

• The French handball players were crowned Olympic champions for the first time, dominating the Russians (30-25) in the final. The Blue took their revenge on the same Russians, who had beaten them in the Rio final five years ago, and offered French handball a double in Japan, after the coronation of the men the day before.

• Untouchables, like Brittney Griner, the American basketball players won the gold medal for the seventh time in a row at the Tokyo Games, beating the Japanese (90-75) in Saitama, where Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi have entered the legend of Olympism. Respectively aged 40 and 39, these two immense champions now belong to the closed club of sportsmen to have won at least one Olympic title in five different editions, alongside the British rower Steve Redgrave, the German kayaker Birgit Fischer, Hungarian fencers Pal Kovacs, Aladar Gerevich and Italian Valentina Vezzali, and German riders Reiner Klimke and Isabell Werth (who even has 6).

• Briton Jason Kenny won the seventh Olympic gold medal of his career at the age of 33, winning the track cycling keirin event at the Tokyo Olympics. He beat the Malaysian Mohd Azizulhasni Awang and the Dutch Harrie Lavreysen, reigning world champion.

• Bulgaria won the rhythmic gymnastics group event at the 2020 Olympic Games, edging the Russians, big favorites and already beaten the day before in the individual event, who will leave Tokyo with “only” two silver medals. The Bulgarians were credited with a total of 92,100 points after the two rotations and edged the Russians (90,700 pts) and the Italians (87,700 pts). Russia had always won this team event since 2000, five consecutive titles.

• The last of the 339 Olympic titles awarded at the Tokyo Olympics went to Serbia, who won the men’s water polo tournament by beating Greece (13-10) in the final. The Serbs won the Olympic title, as in 2016, thanks in particular to three goals from Nikola Jaksic.
