Grosberga and Upītis become Latvian champions in orienteering long distance / Day

Uldis Upītis, the champion of the men’s elite, says about the long-awaited victory: “At the beginning of the week I was ill and until Thursday I wasn’t sure if I would start at all. Fortunately, on Saturday, when I started, I felt physically ready. I started the distance carefully, with a thin second part try to run faster. In principle, this was accomplished as planned, with only a small mistake to the penultimate checkpoint and one poor choice of option, where a machete had to be carried in the meadow in order to move. I am very glad that after many silver medals in previous years and untapped opportunities, we have finally managed to win this title! “

The winning lady’s elite Sandra Grosberga is satisfied with the past: “Although the distance was very green and slow to run, I would say that I really liked it. “I didn’t really prepare for this race and I didn’t run close to my peak either, but I also knew that I could win and the terrain was handy for me.”

“We are really pleased that this year, in the 21st season of the Latvian Cup, we can implement a diverse program, thus providing an opportunity for every athlete and supporter of an active lifestyle to find the orientation distance closest to the heart. Thanks to the long-term support of our cooperation partners, we can continue to develop orienteering in Latvia and welcome more and more new, ambitious participants who want to gain their first orienteering experience or improve their existing knowledge, ”comments Matīss Ratnieks, project manager of the Latvian Orienteering Federation.

For the second year in a row, the company SIA “Maxima Latvija” has been among the supporters of the Latvian orienteering championship in sports. “The competition is a great example of how, despite the impact of Covid-19 on both the sports industry and the lifestyle of society, people continue to play sports actively and take advantage of orienteering. Also in the new season, we will continue to support the Latvian Orienteering Federation in order to further bring orienteering into Latvian sports life and encourage the public to lead a healthy lifestyle in the fresh air, ”says Jānis Beseris, Director of the Corporate Relations Department of Maxima Latvija.

The next stages of the Latvian Championship in sports orienteering will take place on September 4 and 5 in Ērgļi region, with athletes competing in the middle distance and relay.

The Latvian Orienteering Championship and the Latvian Orienteering Cup take place this year from June to October. Both the best individual athletes and the best orienteering clubs will be determined in the competition.
