The Linette sensation

The first qualified for the quarter-finals in San José is called Magda Linette. The 29-year-old Polish player swept in the first round in Tokyo by Aryna Sabalenka was however far from favorite this Wednesday in the round of 16 against Petra Martic, better ranked than she (33rd) and seeded number 6 in the tournament. It is however the 45th world which took the upper hand (7-5, 7-6, 1h54 of play) on the Croatian reached the round of 16 of the US Open in the last two editions. Despite a break quickly conceded in the first set, Linette turned the tide to lead a round to nothing before starting a second set just as hooked as the Polish could have won more easily, however if she had not let Martic return to height when she had broken again and led 4-2.

Everything was therefore decided in a decisive game, very close again, and which saw the lower ranked of the two players once again having the last word (7-5) on her first match point while this time it was Martic who seemed to have the better game (4-2 then 5-3). Linette could find Caroline Garcia in the quarterfinals. Everything will depend on whether the Frenchwoman, also eliminated from the Olympic Games, manages to bring down one of the title contenders in California, the Russian Daria Kasatkina, seeded number 4.
