Football season 2020-2021: the government in favor of the recovery

The hope of footballers now rests in the hands of the MFA.

The 2020-2021 football season could pick up where it left off. In any case, members of the government seem in favor of a recovery according to what was said in Parliament, Saturday, June 19, by Stephan Toussaint, Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Leisure. However, the Mauritius Football Association (MFA) has not yet clearly expressed its position on this issue.

It was first Franco Quirin, the deputy of the Mauritian Militant Movement (MMM), who drew attention to the fate of this season. Minister Toussaint subsequently explained that his ministry had met members of the MFA to discuss a possible recovery after a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Steven Obeegadoo. “I met the leaders of the MFA to explain the conditions linked to the takeover. But we are waiting for a return to transmit to the High Level Committee on Covid-19 “, emphasized Stephan Toussaint.

During his speech, Stephan Toussaint dwelled on the conditions for the recovery. “So that no one is contaminated, we will make our stadiums available to the MFA. It is the officers of the Ministry of Sports who will direct the operations so that the health protocol is observed by all ”, supported Minister Toussaint.

The MFA in no hurry

On the side of the MFA, we hardly seem to rush to make a decision. As a reminder, the governing body of local football wants the end of the season.

This motion has also found an echo among several club leaders. The stoppage of the 2020-2021 season means that there will be no winner or relegated among the three leagues (Super League, D1 and D2).

Moreover, a Emergency Committee was held Friday afternoon at the headquarters of the MFA to rule on the final end of the season. However, those present could not come to a decision because opinions differ.

“We will most likely have to meet again as no decision was made on Friday. The contracts of several players are coming to an end soon, which means that it will be impossible to continue the championship ”, regrets Jean-Eric Panain, Team Manager of Grande-Rivière-Sud-Est Wanderers.
