“The rule that shopping carts had to be used mandatory was actually already released by the government in May,” says Dieter Snoeck, spokesperson for Aldi. “But that decision seems to have fallen between the folds, a lot of people don’t know that. As far as our stores are concerned, we still ask you to use the trolley. It’s still a good way to keep your distance, but we’re no longer making it mandatory.”

Bee Delhaize it is no longer mandatory. “That has been the case for a while, but we have indeed not communicated explicitly about this,” says spokesman Roel Dekelver. Colruyt only abolished it at the end of July. “From then on, we once again made all shopping carts available to customers and they can also enter the store without a cart,” said spokeswoman Patti Verdoodt. “That applies to all our stores, including the Okay, Spar of Bio-Planet. There are no relaxations for disinfecting so-called contact points, so we keep the disinfection columns at the shops where people can disinfect their hands and the cart.

The devices that count the number of customers have also been abolished in the meantime. “You will still see those devices and screens with us,” says Dieter Snoeck. “But the device itself is no longer switched on, the number of customers should no longer count, we still use the screens to communicate with our customers.”
