DFB player Luca Waldschmidt “one step” before Wolfsburg change

In the summer of 2020, Luca Waldschmidt left SC Freiburg and moved to Lisbon. After a year, his time there could soon be over. The Wolfsburg should have a lot of interest.

Will VfL Wolfsburg bring the next DFB player back to the Bundesliga after Lukas Nmecha? According to a report by “Kicker”, VfL is already in talks with Luca Waldschmidt and his club Benfica Lisbon.

The Portuguese daily “Record” also reports that Waldschmidt’s international adventure ends after just one year. Accordingly, the striker is only “one step” away from a transfer to the Wolves. The Bundesliga club should be ready to pay a fee of 12 million euros for the seven-time DFB national player and provide him with a contract until 2025 – the same term as his current contract in Lisbon.

Löw did without Waldschmidt at EM

What speaks for a change: Waldschmidt would definitely play in the Champions League with the Wolves, Benfica is currently fighting in the play-offs for a place in the group phase. Another reason for a return: In the Bundesliga, Waldschmidt might be more in the focus of the new national coach Hansi Flick.

His predecessor Joachim Löw had nominated the former Freiburg again and again in the run-up to the European Championship in 2021, but did without the now 25-year-old for the tournament.

A move to Lower Saxony would definitely have a spicy note. Supporters of the green-whites should still remember the last matchday of the 2016/2017 season. At that time, that Waldschmidt scored the 2-1 winner in the relegation duel between HSV and the Wolves. Hamburg was saved, Wolfsburg had to take the detour via relegation – but ultimately prevailed against Eintracht Braunschweig.
