Cuban judo to confirm tickets to Cali 2021 ›Sports› Granma

Cuban judo has not yet assured its presence in the I Junior Pan American Games, which will take place from November 25 to December 4, 2021 in the Colombian city of Cali.

Precisely, that city hosted, in recent days, the last scoring tournament for the regional ranking for the multisport event, which is directly classified by the top seven in each division.

Cuba had registered 14 athletes, of which 12 (seven men and five women) were withdrawn from the contest as seven of them were positive for COVID-19.

According to statements to Jit by Rafael Manso, national commissioner of the discipline, “the tournament specifications indicated that with four positive cases the country was withdrawn from any possibility of competing.”

“Now we must wait for a delivery of invitations promised by the president of the Pan American Judo Confederation, the Peruvian Carlos Zegarra, who in communication with us expressed that decision due to the impediment of competing,” announced Manso.

However, the judokas Maidelines Gorguet (78 kg) and Thalía Nariño (+78 kg) maintain the possibility of direct classification because, despite not competing, they advanced in the organization chart to fifth place and added 100 points, which can place them among the top seven of the ladder.

For his part, Ray Díaz (100 kg) also added 100 units, although in his case insufficient to reach the November contest directly.

Brazil dominated the contest with nine titles, two silvers and three bronzes, followed by the United States (2-0-3), Ecuador (1-3-3), Colombia (1-2-5) and Venezuela (1-2- 1).

The athletes Ayumi Leyva (48 kg) and Nahomys Acosta (52 kg) left the delegation on the scale held in Madrid, Spain.
