Boston Celtics are planning Kevin Garnett’s jersey ceremony for March

The Boston Celtics want to pull Kevin Garnett’s number five jersey under the ceiling during their game against the Dallas Mavericks on March 13th. The organization announced this over the weekend.

As early as February 2020, during the halftime break of their game against the LA Clippers, the Celtics announced that they would no longer give Garnett’s jersey number and hang his jersey under the ceiling of the TD Gardens. However, because the NBA season had to be suspended shortly afterwards due to the pandemic and then returned with only a few fans, the ceremony was postponed.

“I am honored and grateful,” Garnett said in a video message at the time. “I will always have great respect and appreciation for the owners, Danny Ainge, Doc Rivers, my former teammates, and the Celtic Nation!”

Garnett spent six seasons of his career in Boston. He came to the Celtics via trade in 2007 with Ray Allen, where they founded the new Big 3 of the Celts together with Paul Pierce. In 2008 they won the finals against the Los Angeles Lakers, and when they met again for two years, Boston lost in seven games.

“The Big Ticket” was inducted into the 2020 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame alongside Kobe Bryant and Tim Duncan and will be the 24th player in the history of the Boston Celtics to wear his jersey under the ceiling of the Gardens. Before that, the jersey of his former teammate Pierce will be immortalized.
