BBC Würzburg Hornets play in the youth basketball league

Almost everyone who is successful in sports started doing it in their childhood. In order to promote the next generation, for example, there are performance centers of larger clubs. In Würzburg, a young basketball team has now made the leap into the youth basketball league – even though the club was only founded two years ago.

New establishment: BBC Würzburg Hornets

The club came into being after the collaboration between youth coordinator Dirk Altenbeck and Bundesliga basketball team s.Oliver Würzburg ended in 2019. The parents wanted to keep the Rhinelander and without further ado founded a new association: the BBC Würzburg Hornets. The aim is to teach the children about the sport in a playful way before they learn technical and tactical elements later on. The education of children and adolescents begins with weekly training units and games in Lower Franconia and, with talented children, can lead to the youth league.

Cooperation with Nuremberg and Bamberg

“Founding a new club always involves many risks,” emphasizes Hornets trainer Altenbeck. Above all, you have to finance the financing of a full-time trainer. However, this was successful.

A few weeks ago the association announced a cooperation with Brose Bamberg and Nuremberg. You now share a youth Bundesliga license and can play right at the top. A cooperation with s.Oliver Würzburg is not planned in the near future, but there has been a change in management and there are talks.

“I feel good here,” says the native of the Rhineland. In 2016 he and his family moved to Würzburg to work as a coordinator at the s.Oliver Würzburg junior academy. He has been a full-time trainer at the BBC Würzburg Hornet since 2019, where he trains all ages.
