Athletes from Santiago who left their mark on the Olympic Games

The last Sunday The XXXII Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games ended and our province once again said present with athletes who made up the Argentine delegation. On this occasion, the Multimedio shows you a review made by the Stories of Santiago del Estero site on its social networks, of the athletes from Santiago who represented our country throughout the history of the world’s greatest sport event.

In chronological order

In Amsterdam 1928, Santiago’s Segundo “Ita” Luna and Alberto Helman, made up the Argentine soccer team. The former was a skilled striker for Club Atlético Miter and the latter was a defender at Club Atlético Estudiantes.

Due to their skill, both were summoned to be part of the Argentine soccer team at the 1928 Olympic Games. On that occasion, Argentina reached the final and had to face Uruguay. The Rio de la Plata superclassic was favorable for the Uruguayan team.

In this way, Luna and Helman, from Santiago, obtained the silver medal in that contest.
In London 1948, Rafael Lledó, León Martinetti and Arturo Ruffa were the people of the Province who were part of the national basketball team. Lledó played more than a decade for the albiceleste, obtaining different South American titles. He also participated in the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games.

At the 1984 Los Angeles Games, Roberto Villalba was the only boxer in the province to reach the highest international sports competition.

Meanwhile, in Athens 2004, Miguel Ángel Albarracín, a native of the city of Pinto, represented Argentina in the judo discipline.

Albarracín also participated in Beijing 2008, along with Mariela Coronel from Santiago, a member of the Argentine women’s soccer team.

At the next appointment, in London 2012, the people from the Argentine delegation were Patricia Bermúdez in struggle and Juan Manuel Cano in athletic march.

In Rio de Janeiro 2016, Cano and Bermúdez returned to compete together with three other people from Santiago: Fernando Borello in shooting, José Luis Gómez in soccer and Gabriel Deck in basketball.

At the recently concluded Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, we once again had the presence of Gabriel Deck. In addition, Fernando Valenzuela was part of the soccer team.
