As Olympic Referee, Wahyana Still Teaching Students in Gunungkidul

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —

Indonesian badminton referee, Whyana, who officiated the women’s singles final Tokyo 2020 Olympics, continues to teach his students at SMPN 4 Gunungkidul while in Japan.

This was revealed by Wahyana in the CNN Indonesia TV Connected program, Thursday (5/8). Wahyana said that the world of refereeing and education are both carried out with high dedication because they are professions that are very loved.

Therefore dividing the time between teaching and refereeing is well managed. The Deputy Principal of SMPN 4 Gunungkidul did not want his profession as a referee to get in the way of being a teacher and vice versa.

“Badminton championships don’t happen every month, and I’m not assigned every month either. When I have an assignment, I happen to have a friend replace me. At our school there are two sports teachers,” said Wahyana, who is currently self-isolating.

“While I was in Tokyo, when I had free time and wasn’t leading the match, I took the time to teach personally online“said the man who is also the administrator of the All Badminton Association (PBSI) refereeing field.

The man who idolizes the figure of Taufik Hidayat and the couple Ricky Subagja/Rexy Mainaky added that the process to become an Olympic referee is not an easy matter. He nurtured the hope of leading this prestigious event since he was young.

For him, the Olympics is the highest event that all referees covet, as well as players. Therefore, the opportunities obtained during the SEA Games, Asian Games, and world championships are well utilized so that they are increasingly trusted to lead the match.

“What is certain is that to get a license it takes a long stage, starting from district, province, national, international, just BWF. It’s quite long. That’s the case, not all BWF referees can lead the Olympics. There are special requirements,” he said.

One of the main requirements to be a referee for this universal sporting event is to have a BWF Certificate Empire license. Furthermore, from the many license holders selected the best referees.

Because he has led the world’s prestigious matches, Wahyana is not obsessed with many things anymore. Instead he wants to focus on creating a generation of reliable referees from Indonesia while waiting for his retirement.

“I still exist as a referee now. I am also currently the central administrator of the PBSI in the field of refereeing. We [PBSI] I want to create a young generation of Indonesian referees at the international level,” said Wahyana.

Meanwhile, during his long career as a referee there were several matches that Wahyana would never forget. Some of them are matches that bring together Lin Dan vs Lee Chong Wei and Lin Dan vs Peter Gade Christensen.
