Andrei Shevchenko resigns as national coach

At the European Championship, Ukraine, coached by Andrei Shevchenko, surprised and made it to the quarter-finals of the tournament. The team now needs a new coach to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.

Former world-class striker Andrei Shevchenko has let his contract as coach of the Ukrainian national team expire. “That was hard work in which we showed that we are capable of playing modern football,” wrote the 44-year-old on Instagram on Sunday.

Probably disagreements about finances

The ex-star striker of Ukraine had coached the team for a little over five years. According to media reports, the association and Shevchenko did not come to an agreement financially. It is not yet known who will be his successor.

At the previous European Championship, the Ukrainian team had surprisingly reached the quarter-finals for the first time. However, the Ukrainians were eliminated after a 4-0 draw against England, who would later play the European Championship.

In his playing career, Shevchenko had played for Dynamo Kiev at the beginning and at the end. Abroad, he was mainly active in Italy at AC Milan. However, he also stormed for Chelsea in England for several years. In the Ukrainian national team, he still holds the national goal scorer record with 48 goals.
