Werder gives back leadership from the hand

Maximilian Eggestein led Bundesliga relegated SV Werder Bremen to their first sense of achievement in the second division. The North Germans won on Saturday at Fortuna Düsseldorf with two goals from Joshua Sargent (39th / 64th minute) and a controversial penalty from Eggestein (90th + 6) 3-2 (1-0) and celebrated their first victory after relegation . For Bremen it was the first success in the lower house in more than 40 years.

A week after the 1-1 draw against Hannover 96, the team of the new coach Markus Anfang presented themselves better and used their goal opportunities more consistently. Düsseldorf, on the other hand, who started 2-0 in Sandhausen, suffered a setback in their first home game. In front of 12,850 spectators in the Düsseldorf Arena for the first time, the hosts only scored goals from Rouwen Hennings (47th) and Khaled Narey (90th + 4).

In the first second division duel between the two teams, the Bremen team faced a Düsseldorf team that had changed to five positions and, as the second strongest home team of the past season, exerted a lot of pressure in front of their own audience and also had better chances at the beginning. Driven by the Swede Kristoffer Peterson, the hosts had the best chances of scoring through Edgar Prib and Christoph Klarer (both 17th). But Werder’s goalkeeper Michael Zettterer saved once strongly.

Beginning, who once started his professional career in Düsseldorf, swapped two positions after Bremen’s moderate opening game and only changed little things. As in the first game, many things did not go well for the North Germans, but Niclas Füllkrug, who missed the opportunity to take the lead in the 28th minute, and Sargent and their class caused danger in front of the Düsseldorf goal.

Before the break, Sargent made it 1-0 for Werder with a right-footed shot and, after Hennings equalized, the 2-1 header from a corner kick. It was the 100th second division goal for Bremen. The Dusseldorf squeezed with fresh offensive forces on the equalizer and came with new signing Narey to 2-2, before Eggestein Werder led to the late victory. However, this was preceded by a controversial penalty. Narey played the ball with his hand, but had also been fouled and lost his balance.
