The Belgian Wout van Aert won this Saturday July 17th the 20th stage of the Tour de France, a 30.8 km time trial between Libourne and Saint-Émilion. The Slovenian Tadej Pogacar, eighth on the stage, kept his yellow jersey before the last stage, in principle a simple formality until the arrival on the Champs-Élysées.

Tadej Pogacar (UAE) flies off to his second Tour de France. The Slovenian, eighth in the penultimate stage won by the Belgian Wout van Aert (Jumbo) is, except for a huge racing incident, guaranteed to climb to the top step of the podium tomorrow, in Paris.

The time trial this Saturday, under a summer sun in the famous vineyards of Libournais and Saint-Émilion, left the order of the top ten in the general classification unchanged: Pogacar has 5 min 20 seconds ahead of Vingegaard and 7 min 03 sec on Carapaz, before the last stage.

First time trial for Wout van Aert

Already winner of the Ventoux stage during the second week of the race, on July 7, Wout van Aert won for the fifth time in the Tour, but for the first time in a time trial.

The 26-year-old van Aert will be in contention for Olympic gold in the next Olympic Games in Tokyo, both in the road race and in the time trial.

The 21st and last stage, which is traditionally played in a sprint, is scheduled this Sunday between Chatou, in the west of Paris, and the Champs-Élysées (108.4 km). For the Briton Mark Cavendish, who has already won four times since the start, it is an opportunity to overtake the Belgian Eddy Merckx with whom he holds the record for 34 stage victories. What to eclipse, a little, the reign of Tadej Pogacar.
