This is how a summer camp for basketball professionals works

Cangas squeezes talent

The Cangas Elite Pro-Am campus has players such as the Swedish Simon Birgander, a Joventut de ACB player; Alonso Meana, from the Liberbank Oviedo Basketball of LEB Oro; the Danish Mads Bonde, Ávila player from LEB Plata; or Pedro García, member of the Zentro Basketball Madrid, also silver. The latter ensures that what the campus allows them is to focus completely on basketball throughout the week. “It is an environment in which they put everything, accommodation, food … and the only thing we have to worry about is training one hundred percent, that makes it much easier for us,” he explains.

Unlike the campuses aimed at minors, this campus is work intensive and has no time for leisure. They perform individualized technical and tactical exercises and specialized physical preparation, and they also receive a specific nutrition program for the whole week, carried out by specialists.

“Professional players always want to improve and, in the end, during the season, with the competition and matches during the week, it is difficult, there is no time for everything. So summer is the best time to perfect ”, adds Pedro García. The general director of Liberbank Oviedo, Héctor Galán, points out that the campus “goes to detail and works to improve the player” and considers that there is room in Asturias to be able to develop this type of format, so he hopes that this will be “the first edition of many ”.

Professional players will give way to sports fans between the ages of 7 and 18 at the Cangas del Narcea sports facilities. They will arrive on Sunday to start the XVI edition of the OCB Campus, which will take place in two shifts in Cangas del Narcea, from July 11 to 25, and with a third in Luarca (Valdés), from July 25 to August 1 .

It will be the second time that this campus is held in the southwestern council and in the first week it will have 90 participants, which will be followed by another 65, who will be located at the Home School and will develop the activities in the municipal sports center, on its outdoor courts and in those of the institute.

“We bet on repeating in Cangas because of the facilities they give us and the desire to do things. If it is not for the involvement of the City Council, it would not be possible to carry it out ”, points out Héctor Galán in this regard.

For the mayor, José Víctor Rodríguez, being the headquarters of these camps is very important, since the municipality has a long tradition of organizing sports tournaments during the summer, now halted by the pandemic, and seeks to “be a benchmark in sport for the summer, also for the professional sector ”, emphasizes Rodríguez.
