The sports director of the German cycling team has been sent home from Tokyo for racist remarks

“We are confident that his public apology for racist remarks yesterday was wholehearted,” said DOSB President Alfons Herman. “However, such a mistake by Mr Mozter is a violation of Olympic values. The German team has no compromise on honesty, respect and tolerance,” he added.

DOSB noted that Mozter will no longer be the sports director of the cycling team at the Tokyo Olympics and will return to Germany soon.

The German national television channel ARD broadcasts from a cycling race on Wednesday to hear Mozter urging Nikias Arnt to catch Azedin Lagab from Algeria and Amanuel Gebrezgabihir from Eritrea from the refreshment point on the side of the track using racist words.

“In the heat of the moment and the general stress we live in right now, I chose the wrong words. I’m very sorry, I can only apologize wholeheartedly. I didn’t want to offend anyone,” Mozters told the DPA news agency.

“We have a lot of friends from North Africa, as I said, I’m sorry,” he added.

The show heard 54-year-old Mozter urge Arnt to “catch camel riders.”

Team Africa Rising, which develops cycling in Africa, called on Mozter to resign, insisting the German apology was not enough.

BDR President Rudolf Sharping called Mozter’s remarks unacceptable. The statements were also condemned by the International Cycling Union (ICU).

Algerian Lagabs tried to turn the incident into a joke, writing on Twitter that “camel riding is not on the Olympic program, so I came for cycling. At least I was at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.”

Arnts, on the other hand, distanced himself from the sports director in a Twitter post, stressing that such statements are not acceptable.

“The Olympics and cycling mean tolerance, respect and honesty. I fully uphold these values and take off my hat in front of all the great athletes who have come to Tokyo from all over the world,” wrote the German cyclist, who took 19th place in single-track highway cycling. .

Gebrezgabihir was 33rd, while Lagabs was ranked 36th in the 38 finishing athletes

On Wednesday, Latvian cyclist Toms Skujiņš won the 30th place in the individual race of the Tokyo Olympic Games, while Slovenian Primožs Rogličs was crowned the champion.

The men’s individual race was the last highway cycling competition at the Tokyo Olympics.

The Tokyo Olympics will run until August 8.
