The final is certain – Novak Djokovic meets outsiders

Alexander Zverev failed in the last sixteen, Roger Federer in the quarter-finals. In addition to Novak Djokovic, there will be a surprise from Italy in the Wimbledon final.

The world number one Novak Djokovic is only missing a win at Wimbledon for the historic 20th Grand Slam title. Despite a not entirely convincing performance, the 34-year-old Serb made it into the final on Sunday with a 7: 6 (7: 3), 7: 5, 7: 5 against the impetuous Canadian semi-final debutant Denis Shapovalov. There he fights against the Italian Matteo Berrettini for his third Wimbledon title in a row, the sixth overall.

Djokovic in front of a special brand

Berrettini had previously won 6: 3, 6: 0, 6: 7 (3: 7), 6: 4 against the Pole Hubert Hurkacz, who had defeated record winner Roger Federer (Switzerland) in the quarterfinals. While the Roman is the first Italian to be in the Wimbledon final, it is already the seventh final in London for Djokovic. Only Federer achieved more (12).

On Sunday, Djokovic can win the 20th title in the 30th Grand Slam final of his career and draw level with the leaders Federer and Rafael Nadal (Spain) in the list of the best. In addition, after the victories in Melbourne and Paris, he would come one step closer to the Golden Slam – winning all four major tournaments in one year as well as the gold medal in the Olympic singles. So far, only Steffi Graf had succeeded in doing this in 1988.

Shapovalov fights, but just fails

Although he had already lost the previous six duels, the carefree Shapovalov Djokovic caused great problems. The 22-year-old gave the top favorite with his variable game no rhythm, found wonderful angles – but also took full risk. A little too high-spirited, he first restored his break advantage, then with too many frivolous mistakes the tiebreaker.

Even with the flattering set win behind Djokovic, nothing went easily. Shapovalov played with a completely different looseness – even if he wobbled again in the hot phase of the second set and Djokovic served the decisive break to 5: 6 with a double error on the silver platter. Despite the 2-0 set deficit, the Canadian continued to fight bravely, but the comeback did not want to succeed.
