Behind the increasing number of former professional baseball coaches in the high school baseball world is the drastic relaxation of the “Pro-Am Regulations” stipulated in the Japan Student Baseball Charter, which was implemented in 2013. Although former professional high school baseball coaching was approved in 1984, the condition that “there is more than 10 years of work experience as a teacher” was imposed. Although it was gradually shortened from 10 to 5 years in 1994 and from 5 to 2 years in 1997, three years later, it was a major premise to “acquire a teacher’s license and stand on the podium.” Was there.
However, in 2013, the provision for work history as a teacher was completely abolished. By participating in workshops held by professionals and amateurs and undergoing appropriate examinations, it became possible for non-teachers to engage in high school baseball coaching.
In the case of the above-mentioned five people introduced as an example, only Wakabayashi of Tokai University Sugao belongs to the school as a teacher. Others are supervised by titles other than teachers, such as school staff, local government employees at the school location, and office workers.
It was Ogoshi who regained his teaching qualifications while there was still a big gap between professionals and amateurs. After retiring from active duty at Daiei in 2003, he transferred to the University of East Asia (Yamaguchi) the following year, attended university for three years, and obtained a teacher’s license for health and physical education. From the spring of 2007, he started teaching as a teacher at Hayatomo, and two years later, in May, he obtained a student baseball coaching qualification.
