The Spanish national team has qualified for the semifinals of the 2020 European Cup after winning on penalties over Switzerland. La Furia Roja is indeed matched with the high-five round in this tournament.
Spain faced Switzerland in the quarter-finals which was held at the Kretovsky stadium, Saturday (3/7/2021) early morning WIB. Winning fast in the eighth minute through an own goal by Denis Zakaria, Spain seems to be going to win easily.
However, Switzerland after that was able to defend well and muffle any Spanish attacks. Until finally the score became 1-1 in the 68th minute after Xherdan Shaqiri broke Unai Simon’s net due to an error by the Spanish defenders.
No more goals were created until 120 minutes of the match was completed, even though Spain had many opportunities in the 2×15 minute extra time round. In the shootout, two Spanish kickers failed, namely Sergio Busquets and Rodri.
From Switzerland, there were three executioners failed before the execution of Mikel Oryazabal ensured a 3-1 victory in the shootout. Spain is just waiting for the winners of the Belgian and Italian parties.
For Spain, qualifying on penalties is nothing new in major tournaments. Although in their last penalty shootout at the 2018 World Cup, they were defeated by Russia, Spain was able to win six of the last 10 high-fives.
In the European Cup, Spain even won four of the last five penalty shootouts. Even the three wins in the penalty shootout led to their qualification to the finals, in 1984 (against Denmark), 2008 (Italy), and Portugal (2012).
Can this time Spain step up again to the top party of Euro 2020? Let’s just wait.
“This was the quietest penalty shootout I could have gone through, because we did everything well, did what we were trained to do, and myself and the coaching team didn’t have to do anything,” Spain coach Luis Enrique told the tournament’s official website.
