Austria’s champions Red Bull Salzburg won a friendly against a top-class opponent on Wednesday. Salzburg defeated Spanish champions Atletico Madrid 1-0 in front of 21,000 spectators at their home Red Bull Arena. Karim Adeyemi scored the goal of the day in the 34th minute.
Against an impressive backdrop, Salzburg immediately took command against a very young Atletico team, which was missing numerous stars. Luka Sucic, Mohamed Camara and Adeyemi, in particular, were a constant source of danger, while Atletico goalie Jan Oblak had to deal with several dangerous situations.
In minute 34 he was also beaten. Camara captured the ball in midfield and passed it on to Sucic, who passed Adeyemi directly. The striker loaded an Atletico defender while dribbling and sank the ball with his left hand via the inside bar at the bottom right.

At the break, both teams changed hands strongly, but Salzburg remained the team that determined the game. In the 56th minute, however, the supposed equalizer fell: After a playback error in the defense of the “Bulls”, the ball came after a quick pass to Giuliano Simeone, the son of coach Diego Simeone, who scored well. After several minutes of VAR study, however, the hit was denied due to an offside position.
The Austrian champions subsequently remained unscathed and celebrated a prestigious victory. Coach Matthias Jaissle was satisfied afterwards: “It was a great atmosphere to play in front of the home fans again after such a long time. Basically, I have to compliment the team, they did it really well from the first minute. But we must not draw the wrong conclusions from this now. We know that Atletico Madrid were not in the best line-up. “
