Sinner under attack | Salto. Or

With a long post, written in Italian and English, the Sesto tennis professional Jannik Sinner communicated over the weekend via his social media channels: He will not be participating in the Tokyo Summer Olympics. The games, which have been postponed to this year in 2020 due to the corona pandemic, will take place from July 23 to August 8.

Sinner, who is celebrating his 20th birthday on August 16, wrote that not going to the Olympic Games was an easy decision. He gives the reason that he has not played “my best tennis” in the last few tournaments. Sinner also writes: “I need this time to work on my game, my goal is to become a better player on and off the pitch.” He hopes his fans will understand him, “I feel that this is the best decision for my future”.

Someone who has absolutely no understanding for Sinner’s rejection of the Olympic Games is Corrado Barazzutti. The former Italian tennis professional draws a comparison with the Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic: “It is impressive to see 34-year-old Djokovic excited to participate in the Olympics. Sorry to see Jannik Sinner 20 years mortifying the highest competition in the world as values. “ No athlete without physical problems voluntarily renounces the Olympics – especially not if it is the first participation, as is the case with Sinner, writes Barazzutti on Facebook. “If you don’t believe in certain values, if certain principles are worthless, it is better to stay home.”

Instead of Jannik Sinner Lorenzo Musetti, 19 years old, from Carrara, take part in the Olympic competitions.
