Sem Steijn wants to take his chance at ADO: ‘This must be my season’

Before the match, the ADO supporters showed a banner with the text ‘club love knows no division’. In a month’s time, the team from the Hofstad will start after the relegation in the first division. Young Ajax is then the opponent at home.

‘This is the perfect season to show me as a young boy’, concludes Steijn. On a visit to Laakkwartier, the 19-year-old Hagenaar was accurate twice. ‘I have to take the opportunities that I get now. Last year was a disappointment because I didn’t play. A lot of new players came in, while my intention was to get to the first one. That didn’t work then.’

“I’m closer to the base than last season”

Next year Steijn hopes that trainer Ruud Brood will give him the opportunity to make his debut in yellow-green. Two and a half years ago, Steijn made his debut in the Eredivisie under his father Maurice at VVV-Venlo, after which he left for the United Arab Emirates with him. Yet minutes at the highest level were not yet in The Hague.

‘But I think I’m closer to the basics now than last year’, Steijn suspects. ‘There is less budget, which means that the group of players is smaller. I still have to improve in all areas, but I hope the trainer sees it in me.’

The new striker: Marius van Mil

Marius van Mil also found the net twice against Laakkwartier. The striker who came over from Excelsior Maassluis signed his first professional contract in January of this year. ‘It is certainly a step’, the 19-year-old talent looks back on his first weeks in The Hague. “I play here with better players who have also played at big clubs. The level is a lot higher.’

In the striker, Van Mil has so far replaced the departed Michiel Kramer and Jonas Arweiler. Van Mil hopes to make the two forget. ‘I am a goal thief who is not only a good header, but also strong with left and right.’

Milan van Ewijk scenario

Van Mil is not the first player to come over from the amateurs from the second division. In the summer of 2019, Milan van Ewijk, who now left for sc Heerenveen, followed the same route. “We have definitely been in touch,” said the striker. “He recommended the club to me. Last season I already trained with Jong ADO for a few months and I really like it. It’s a nice group.’
