Pete Carroll and the Seahawks have spoken with Richard Sherman

Rumors of a potential return of Richard Sherman to the Seattle Seahawks they remain as the five-time Pro Bowl is still a free agent. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that Sherman is “open” to returning to the Seahawks, but is looking for a “decent contract.”

They told me this is still a possibility, that Sherman is still open to going back to the Legion of Boom, or what’s left of it, “Fowler told SportsCenter, via Bleacher Report. “He’s made the West Coast his home, he still has a home in Seattle, a lot of people think he wants to keep playing for a West Coast team, and Seattle needs a cornerback. There is no contact for now, but perhaps closer to the start of training something can be fixed. Seattle must decide how to invest the money they have from [Jamal] Adams before investing it elsewhere, but a guy like Sherman is not going to accept the minimum wage. He is a high-level player who is going to want a decent contract.

Shaquille Griffin and Quinton Dunbar left as free agents, leaving the Seahawks short of cornerbacks. It will be worth seeing if the Seahawks look to sign Sherman when training begins in July, if he continues as a free agent.

Seahawks “always open” to Sherman coming back to Seattle, says Carroll

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll was asked about a possible return to the team. Carroll left the door open for the team to rehire Sherman, but admitted that it is not in the plans for now.

“There’s always the possibility,” Carroll said in May, according to Seahawks.com. I have spoken to Sherm several times during the offseason. Keep in touch. I know he’s thinking about it. You are looking for an opportunity. I know you said you are looking at offers from three or four teams. We’ll see what happens, but he’s a great player and I’m sure he still has good years to come. For now we are going to see what will happen to the newbies we have and then we will see how things continue.

Sherman wants to play for a team competing for a Championship

Carroll added that he is not looking to hire cornerbacks, but “he will not close the door on anything.” Carroll and the team’s general manager, John Schneider, said there is no hard feelings between Sherman and the team.

“For now I’m just giving you the pleasure”, added Carroll. “At this time we are not considering hiring anyone else. But we will keep looking. We will not stop doing it. We will be competitive. In that sense, I leave all the doors open, and that is just one of the options. Say what you want, but that’s the way it is.

Sherman only played five games for the Niners last season due to a calf injury that ruined much of his season. Just two seasons ago, the former Seahawks player had been selected for the Pro Bowl, having registered three interceptions, eleven deflected passes and 61 tackles in the year he reached the Super Bowl with the 49ers. During a interview with Bloomberg in June, Sherman indicated that he expects to be hired by a contender.

“I just want to join a team that competes for a Championship, so I am concentrating on that and waiting for the best opportunity,” Sherman said. “When it happens, that’s where I’ll be.”
