Renato Gaúcho, Flamengo’s new coach | Other Soccer Leagues

Flamengo, champion of the last two editions of the Brazilian Championship, announced this Saturday the acquisition of Renato Gaúcho as his new coach, in the place of Rogerio Ceni, dismissed this same day in the middle of a deep crisis in the most popular club in Brazil. The hiring, after several days of speculation, was confirmed by the Rio de Janeiro club with a message on its social networks welcoming Renato Gaúcho, fired earlier this year by the Guild after several years of bonding and having provided him with several titles to the tricolor club of Porto Alegre.

Renato Gaúcho, champion of the Libertadores with the Gremio both as a player (1983) and as a coach (2017), agreed with Flamengo a contract that links him with the club until the end of the year, due to the fact that the mandate of the current leaders of the entity expire in December.

The contract, however, can be automatically renewed by the new administration in January. The coach had rejected the first proposal he received from the Rio de Janeiro-based entity, but ended up accepting one below his pretensions because he never hid that one of his biggest dreams was to command Flamengo, a club for which he played between 1987 and 1990 and with the one that conquered the 1990 Copa do Brasil. Renato Gaúcho will only assume command of the team on Monday, when Flamengo travels to Argentina for his match with Defensa y Justicia for the second round of the Copa Libertadores.

The new Flamengo coach had no ties since the beginning of the year when he terminated his contract with the Gremio after more than four years of conquests, in which the tricolor club from Porto Alegre conquered the Copa Libertadores (2017), the Recopa Sudamericana (2018). ), the Copa do Brasil (2016) and three editions of the Gaúcho Championship (2018, 2019 and 2020).

Since the coach’s departure, the Guild has plunged into a serious football crisis and is currently the last in the classification of the Brazilian Championship, a place where it is threatened with relegation to the second division. Flamengo also faces a crisis of results, which has it in twelfth place in the league table, with 12 points in 8 games and 13 points from the leader Palmeiras (25), after having been one of the most successful clubs in Brazil in the last years.

In addition to the titles of the Brazilian Championship in 2019 and 2020, Flamengo was champion of the Libertadores in 2020. The irregularity of the last weeks ended up costing him the position of Rogério Ceni, the exporter of the Brazilian team who assumed the command of the Rio club de Janeiro last December and, despite a good average of results, suffered criticism within the entity. Under Ceni’s technical direction, Flamengo had 23 wins, 11 losses and 10 draws in the 44 games played.
