Ons Jabeur, living history of Tunisian tennis

Ons Jabeur (24th) took all the flashes from Wimbledon central courtAfter defeating Garbiñe Muguruza (12th) in three sets, nothing more and nothing less: the Spanish is a two-time Grand Slam champion and former world number one.

Jabeur is already the most important Tunisian tennis player of all time. At the Australian Open 2020, she became the first player from her country to reach the knockout stages of a Grand Slam. On that occasion, he had defeated Caroline Wozniacki (she retired after that defeat). She was finally defeated in the quarterfinals by Sofia Kenin.

In the same year that he achieved the milestone in Melbourne, did the same at Roland Garros, where he also reached the fourth round. And in this tournament, but as a Junior, he played two consecutive finals: in 2010 he fell to Elina Svitolina (5th) and he retaliated in 2011 by beating Monica Puig (216 °).

Although he currently enjoys an incredible tennis present, his beginnings were complicated … “The family has always supported me, even though we have gone through difficult times. We are not a family of money”, he had declared for the media of his country in 2020.

Since he was young, he shows the talent he has for tennis. So much so that it captured the attention of US universities and Belgian and French sports centers. Jabeur rejected all the proposals and decided to continue betting on the preparation in his country, where he trained until he was 16 years old.

Faced with her emerging growth in the WTA ranking, the Tunisian decided to make a sacrifice in 2017: applied for special permission to cut off Ramadan, a Muslim tradition, where they must comply with a month of daily fasting from dawn until sunset, in order to obtain forgiveness of their sins.

Today, the 26-year-old Tunisian, who already holds a WTA title, works alongside her husband Karim Kamoun (physical trainer), who is a former fencing fencer.
