Tokyo 2021: Olympic medals made from electronic waste
There is something special about the medals this year. In contrast to previous Olympic Games, they are made from electronic waste. With this, the organizers want to set an example against the throwaway society. For this purpose, 80,000 tons of electronic waste were collected across Japan between 2017 and 2019. The designer of the medals is Junichi Kawanishi, who prevailed with his design in a competition against more than 400 projects.
About 2.7 tons of bronze, 4.1 tons of silver and 30 kilos of gold are needed to produce the coveted medals. The design is intended to be a reminder of the efforts of the athletes, an homage to commitment and a sign of fame and friendship.
