“We owe this primarily to our sponsors and fans, who remained loyal to us in the pandemic year and thus ensured the economic basis for obtaining the license,” said Niners managing director Steffen Herhold, who at the same time noted, “that the license This is only the first step and we would like to lay the foundation stone together with old and new partners to establish the Niners permanently in the BBL. Of the 23 applications originally submitted (including potential newcomers), the BBL finally had 19 applications to be assessed by the license league committee. This evaluation was preceded by intensive reviews of the licensing documents in the past few weeks by the BBL committee of experts (financial situation of the clubs) and the league itself (formal framework conditions and youth work).

“The submitted documents were not only very well prepared by the clubs, but carefully calculated taking into account the pandemic conditions,” said Thomas Braumann, chairman of the BBL license league committee. “For the current season 2020/21 we can already say today that all clubs will get through the season well financially – also thanks to the state support payments. For this we owe our thanks and respect to all club managers.”

In terms of sport, the Niners had managed to stay in the league a week ago as a newcomer. Tomorrow they will be challenged for the last time away from home (8.30 p.m. in Würzburg) before the first season of Chemnitz in the BBL will be concluded on Sunday with the home game against German champions Alba Berlin (3 p.m.).
