The German judoka missed a big surprise in the first team competition in Olympic history. In the judo temple Nippon Budokan, the mixed team around silver medalist Eduard Trippel (silver) lost the quarter-finals against world champion and top favorite Japan after a 2-0 lead 2: 4. In the hope ground there is still the chance of bronze.
Theresa Stoll initially won against the much easier Uta Abe, and Igor Wandtke also defeated a Tokyo Olympic champion in Shohei Ono. Giovanna Scoccimarro, who was spared Trippel in the round of 16 against the refugee team (4-0), Jasmin Grabowski and Johannes Frey then lost their fights.
The mixed team is the last judo decision in Tokyo. The battered Olympic third Anna-Maria Wagner (bronze) was not in the German squad.
